Govt in SC for open-court hearing of review of Benami law judgment

The SC agreed to consider the Centre’s submissions for an open court hearing of its plea seeking review of the judgment by which several provisions of the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment Act, 2016 were struck down. The court had struck down section 3(2) and section 5 of Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Act, 1988, and one of the provisions which provided for the punishment of a maximum jail term of three years or a fine or both for those indulging in ‘benami’ transactions.

Study: More cold wave days in India in recent decade

India may have seen a number of record-breaking warm years in the recent decades, but there has been no let-up in the extreme cold waves in the country despite global warming, an IITM study has indicated. The analysis, led by IITM scientists Raju Mandal and Susmitha Joseph, took into account the number of cold wave events in the last seven decades, 1951–2022, and found that more cold wave days are occurring in the recent decades than in the previous ones.

1/3rd of undergraduate students in India doing BA: Survey

Over 78.9% of 4.1 crore students in higher education are enrolled at the undergraduate level, and of the total enrolled students over one crore are pursuing BA. Growth indicator: India's night lights up 43% in 10 yrs

Decadal Change of Night Time Light over India from Space (2012-2021), released by Isro’s National Remote Sensing Centre — shows that overall at the national level, normalised NTL radiance increased by 43% in 2021 compared to 2012. Court sets aside order on summons to Shetty sisters

Observing that the order against them was not proper or legal, in a relief to actor Shilpa Shetty Kundra and her sister Shamita Shetty, a Mumbai court recently quashed and set aside a 2022 magistrate court order issuing summons to them in a Rs21 lakh cheating case. Collegium sends names to govt for appointment as HC judges

The Supreme Court collegium has recommended to the Centre names of eight persons for appointment as judges in five different high courts. The names included that of judicial officer Golmei Gaiphulshillu Kabui who, if cleared by the Centre, would be the first woman from the ST community to become a judge of Manipur HC. The collegium comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph on Monday also recommended the names of two other women.
