Biden defends departure from 'forever war'

A defensive US President Joe Biden called the US airlift to extract more than 120,000 Afghans, Americans and other allies to end a 20-year war an “extraordinary success,” though more than 100 Americans and thousands of Afghans remain behind. Biden vigorously defended his decision to end America's longest war and withdraw all US troops ahead of an August 31 deadline. “I was not going to extend this forever war,” Biden declared from the White House. "And I was not going to extend a forever exit.”

Why Kohli's form holds the key to India's fortunes

In the cricketing world, it is a given that weight of runs will elevate one to the leadership role. It is only natural, then, that like all great batsmen who are handed the captaincy, Virat Kohli's chief characteristics - poise, confidence, swagger, resourcefulness, the ability to transfuse his often-uncanny energy into the team in times of crises - remain in equilibrium only as long as he is scoring runs.

‘Afghanistan situation led to strategy rethink’

The situation in Afghanistan has emerged as a challenge for India, which along with alignment and realignment of global powers had led the country to rethink its strategy while also putting its weight behind the ‘Quad’, defence minister Rajnath Singh said on Sunday. Turning to the continuing military confrontation with China in eastern Ladakh, he said a unilateral attempt was made last year to change the status quo on the northern borders, which also led to the Galwan Valley clashes.
